Summary Seedling mortality caused by excessive salinity is common in establishing furrow-irrigated crops. This study was conducted to evaluate the processes involved and salinity levels leading to seedling mortality in guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray cv. 593), carrot (Daucus carota L. cv. Imperator-58), chile pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. New Mex. 6–4), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mills cv. Rutgers). Salt accumulation patterns were also evaluated in soil columns subirrigated with waters of 0.8 and 3.9 dS m–1. Seedlings were first grown for 10 to 16 days in greenhouse pots with water of 0.8 dS m–1. Upon emergence of the first true leaf, seedling roots, leaves and stems were independently exposed to different levels of salinity (0.8 to 59 dS m–1) under two diurnal temperature regimes (22–32°C and 24–40°C). When seedling roots were exposed to the saline solutions, mortality was sub stantially greater under the high temperature, and increased greatly at salinity levels of soil solutions exceeding about 5 dS m–1 in guayule and carrot, and 15 dS m–1 in tomato and pepper. Mortality caused by leaf exposures to saline spray was greater under the low temperature with higher relative air humidities, and increased greatly when salinity levels of spray solutions exceeded ap 5, 10, 15 and 20 dS m–1 in guayule, carrot, tomato and pepper, respectively. Physical abrasion of seedling leaves prior to saline water spraying significantly increased mortality. Stem exposure to a thin layer of salted sand having the saturation extract salinity of up to 58 dS m–1 caused no significant increase in mortality. Soluble salts were accumulated mostly in a soil depth of 0 to 0.5 cm at a rate of 35 dS m–1 in 3 weeks when subirrigated with water of 3.9 dS m–1. Under furrow-irrigated conditions, seedling mortality may be induced mainly through leaf and/or root, but not stem, exposure to the salts accumulated at soil surfaces. Leaf-induced mortality can be the most significant process when wind-damaged seedlings are exposed to saline splatters during light showers common to the semi-arid region.Contribution from Texas Agr. We present an innovative approach to explore water management options in irrigated agriculture considering the constraints of water availability and the heterogeneity of irrigation system properties. The method is two-folds: (i) system characterization using a stochastic data assimilation procedure where the irrigation system properties and operational management practices are estimated using remote sensing (RS) data; and (ii) water management optimization where we explored water management options under various levels of water availability. We set up a soil–water–atmosphere–plant model (SWAP) in a deterministic–stochastic mode for regional modeling. The distributed data, e.g. sowing dates, irrigation practices, soil properties, depth to groundwater and water quality, required as inputs for the regional modeling were estimated by minimizing the residuals between the distributions of field-scale evapotranspiration (ET) simulated by the regional application of SWAP, and by surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) using two Landsat7 ETM+ images. The derived distributed data were used as inputs in exploring water management options. Genetic algorithm was used in data assimilation and water management optimizations. The case study was conducted in Bata minor (lateral canal), Kaithal, Haryana, India during 2000–2001 rabi (dry) season. Our results showed that under limited water condition, regional wheat yield could improve further if water and crop management practices are considered simultaneously and not independently. Adjusting sowing dates and their distribution in the irrigated area could improve the regional yield, which also complements the practice of deficit irrigation when water availability is largely a constraint. This result was also found in agreement with the scenario that water is non-limited with the exception that the farmers have more degrees of freedom in their agricultural activities. An improvement of the regional yield to 8.5% is expected under the current scenario.  相似文献

Ninety-seven pure-bred Akitas were examined clinically and histologically for sebaceous adenitis. The diagnosis was established histologically in 23 Akitas by demonstrating an inflammatory reaction targeted against the sebaceous glands or a reduction in the number of glands. The clinical course of sebaceous adenitis in the Akita was similar to that seen in other breeds. The first skin lesions occurred mainly on the dorsal midline and ears. Compared with the Poodle, the age at first onset of the disease was more variable and the hair loss affected mainly the undercoat. The progression of sebaceous gland destruction varied between dogs and was not seen in all cases. Because bud-like sebaceous gland proliferation could be identified, it seems that regeneration of the sebaceous glands may occur. An autosomal recessive inheritance appears to be possible. Apart from a genetic background, immune-mediated factors possibly influence the onset and course of sebaceous adenitis.  相似文献

Xylazine administered subcutaneously (s.c.; 1–4 mg/kg) or intravenously (i.v.; 0.5-2 mg/kg) to cats consistently caused dose-related decreases in body temperature which were maximal 3–4 h after injection and lasted for at least 12 h. Otherwise the animals appeared to have recovered fully from the central nervous system effects of the drug within 1.5–3.5 h. Xylazine-induced hypothermia developed more rapidly in cats placed in a 4°C environment and, in contrast, was replaced by a hyperthermic response in cats placed in a 32°C environment. These changes in body temperature were not opposed by compensatory thermoregulatory effector activity such as shivering or tachypnea. This pattern of responses at varied environmental temperatures is indicative of a general depression of the thermo-regulation. Thus, animals given xylazine should not be exposed to extreme heat or cold for several hours to avoid development of hyper- or hypothermia.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to examine the impact of supplementation with creatine monohydrate (CMH) on the quality of various muscles from normal and heterozygous halothane carrier pigs. Twenty-nine crossbred pigs, 16 normal (NN) and 13 halothane carrier (Nn) genotypes, were supplemented with 0 or 25 g x pig(-1) x d(-1) of CMH for 5 d before slaughter. Supplemented pigs gained 2.26 kg more weight (P < 0.05) during 5 d of supplementation. There were trends (P < 0.10) toward higher objective marbling scores and lower cooking loss for supplemented pigs. The 45-min pH was 0.27 units higher (P < 0.05) for supplemented pigs in the semimembranosus; CMH supplementation did not influence (P > 0.05) drip loss or muscle composition. Supplementation with CMH also resulted in lower L* values in two ham muscles, semitendinosus (5.15 units) (P < 0.05) and semimembranosus (1.95 units) (P < 0.10) for Nn carcasses. Genotype had significant effects on most quality indicators, with Nn carcasses producing lower-quality lean as evidenced by less desirable subjective and objective color and higher drip losses. Genotype also affected the composition of several muscles, with the NN carcasses having more fat and less moisture.  相似文献

Cataract surgeries were carried out in fifty-one eyes of 36 horses over a 15-year period. Cataracts were removed using phacofragmentation and aspiration. Useful vision was restored after surgery in 30 horses. One year after surgery 16 of the 19 horses for which follow up information was available were still visual with several still being used as working horses. At 5-6 years after surgery three horses were still visual. The most frequent intraoperative complication was tearing of the posterior lens capsule. The most frequent postoperative problem was superficial corneal ulceration. Four eyes in three horses developed postoperative infectious endophthalmitis resulting in blindness.  相似文献

A 3-year-old intact male Boer goat was evaluated for paraplegia. Computed tomography (CT) indicated the presence of diskospondylitis, which had previously not been reported in this species, and significant compressive myelopathy. Chronic bacterial pneumonia, epididymitis, nephritis, and soft-tissue abscesses were believed to result in hematogenous spread of bacteria to the affected disk spaces. Staphylococcus spp. and Archanobacterium pyogenes were both identified from postmortem cultures of the vertebral column.  相似文献

This work proposes the use of a diisocyanate as curing agent for novolac-type lignin–phenol–formaldehyde (LPF) resins, instead of typical hexamethylene–tetraamine (HMTA), with the aim of overcoming the loss of reactivity of lignophenolic resins resulting from the introduction of lignin. Curing LPF resins with methylene–diisocyanate (MDI) and HMTA has been investigated through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheological analysis. The analysis of experimental results shows that the proposed curing reaction with MDI gives similar results to those for HMTA-cured systems. However, MDI curing is faster than HMTA one and proceeds easier at lower temperatures.  相似文献

This study proposes a methodology for forecasting crop yields at intermediate times in the growing season using Markov chain theory. A Markov chain is constructed, based on historical data, to provide forecast distributions of crop yield for various crop and soil moisture condition classes at selected times prior to harvest. Expected yield and the associated standard error are obtained for each condition class. The methodology is compared to a regression approach in which the independent variables are the various crop and soil moisture conditions. The Markov chain approach requires less stringent assumptions and provides more information than the regression approach. However, the potential loss of precision in the forecast using this approach requires separate evaluation for each application. A data base created by the CERES-Maize model, which simulates the growth and development of a corn crop, is used to demonstrate the development of the forecast yield distributions using the Markov chain approach.  相似文献
